How to Measure a Window for a Mosquito Screen

To order a made-to-measure framed mosquito screen, measure the clear opening of the open window sash — from one rubber seal to the opposite seal across both the width and height. Below, we explain every step and show you how to avoid common measuring mistakes.

Quick answer
Open the window sash, measure the distance from one rubber seal to the opposite seal, and add 40 mm to both the measured width and height.

What you need to take the measurements

Tape measure
Use a metal tape measure with a clear millimetre scale.
Paper or a phone
Record the width, height and number of screens immediately.
Open window sash
The measurements are taken from inside through the open window sash.

How to Measure a PVC Window for a Mosquito Screen

1

Open the window sash

Open the sash where the mosquito screen will be installed. Clean any dust from the rubber seal so the tape measure can sit accurately against it.

2

Measure the width from seal to seal

Place the tape measure against the inner edge of the left rubber seal and measure to the inner edge of the right seal. Do not measure the entire window sash or the outside dimensions of the window frame.

3

Measure the height

Measure the clear opening vertically in the same way, from the upper rubber seal to the lower seal. Keep the tape measure straight and do not tilt it.

4

Check the measurements again

Measure the width and height a second time. For an uneven or non-standard opening, take measurements at three points. If the difference exceeds 3–4 mm, consult a specialist before ordering.

5

Add 40 mm

Add 40 mm to the measured width and another 40 mm to the measured height. This is the standard allowance for the screen frame, which overlaps the clear opening by approximately 20 mm on each side.

Measurement formula

Screen size = clear opening size + 40 mm

Screen width:
seal-to-seal width + 40 mm
Screen height:
seal-to-seal height + 40 mm

Mosquito screen measurement example

Suppose the clear opening between the rubber seals has the following dimensions:

Opening width: 600 mm
Opening height: 1200 mm

Finished screen size:
600 + 40 = 640 mm
1200 + 40 = 1240 mm

When placing your order, specify whether you are providing the clear opening measurements or the finished outside dimensions of the screen.

What to check before ordering

✓ There must be enough free space around the outside of the window for the screen frame to overlap the opening.
✓ The windowsill flashing, hinges, security bars and reveals must not obstruct installation or removal.
✓ The window frame profile should not be severely bent or damaged.
✓ Non-standard windows, concealed hinges or narrow outside profiles should be checked by a specialist.

Common measuring mistakes

  • Measuring the entire window sash instead of the clear opening.
  • Measuring from the edge of the PVC profile rather than from the rubber seal.
  • Taking only one measurement without checking it again.
  • Confusing the opening measurements with the finished screen dimensions.
  • Ignoring hinges, flashing, security bars or a nearby window reveal.
  • Rounding measurements to centimetres — provide all dimensions in millimetres.

How to Install a Mosquito Screen from Inside

A standard framed mosquito screen can be installed through an open window sash. Hold the screen by its handles, carefully move it outside, position the upper section behind the fasteners, press the frame against the window and secure the lower section. The exact method depends on the type of fixing system.

Do not lean against the screen or leave children unattended near an open window. A mosquito screen keeps insects out but is not a safety barrier designed to prevent falls.

How to Measure a Mosquito Screen for a Balcony Door

The measuring method for a hinged door screen differs from the method used for a framed window screen. You need to consider the outside dimensions of the door frame, opening direction, hinge position, handle, magnetic catches and the available installation space.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mosquito Screen Measurements

Where should I start measuring the window?

For a standard framed screen, measure the clear opening of the open sash from the inner edge of one rubber seal to the inner edge of the opposite seal.

How much should I add to the opening measurements?

For a standard framed system, add 40 mm to both the width and height of the clear opening. Before manufacturing, check that there is enough outside space for the frame.

Which units should I use?

Record and provide all measurements in millimetres, stating the width first and the height second.

Can I measure an existing mosquito screen?

Yes, provided the old screen fitted the same window correctly. Measure its outside frame dimensions and specify that you are providing the finished product size.

What should I do if the measurements differ at various points?

Do not calculate an average yourself. Provide all measurements to a specialist or request a professional measuring service.

How can I order a made-to-measure mosquito screen?

Record the width and height in millimetres and specify the screen type, frame colour and required quantity. A ZAMER specialist will help check the measurements before production.
